Lecture and Breakfast: Fanny Churberg – Rebell & Mademoiselle According to the Press of the Time

The art scholar and librarian, Anna-Lena Jönsson, is one of the authors of the book Rebeller och Mademoiseller. The book highlights how turn-of-the-century female artists, such as Emma Toll, Tyra Kleen and Märta Rudbeck, despite active artistry fell into oblivion - or were even deliberately ignored. The three norm-breaking artists went against society's expectations in that three broke the rules to train as artists, both abroad and in Sweden, and try to make a living from their art. The similarities with the Finnish landscape painter Fanny Churberg are striking.

Anna-Lena examines how Nordic female artists were presented in the daily press of the time. With today's perspective, can one express something new about the reception and through that clarify the place of women in the writing of art history?

The starting point is Emma Toll's life and work, and there are more examples of female artists born in the 1840s to highlight, not least Fanny Churberg. With the help of our exhibition catalogue, Carl Fredrik Hill & Fanny Churberg – towards a new landscape, and daily newspapers from the time, Anna-Lena brings out a picture of Churberg's generation, the women who broke through in the art scene of the 1870s.
