What happens when the familiar suddenly feels foreign? In Where We Are, some of Sweden's most interesting and significant contemporary artists come together to explore the uncertainty and ambiguity that define our present moment. Through painting, sculpture, photography, and installation, they create works that reveal the traces – sometimes clear, sometimes barely perceptible – that shape our experience of the world.
The exhibition highlights the feeling of unease in a world in transformation, with a focus on the disruption of a once stable order. The uncanny, Unheimliche, is a state where the familiar becomes strange, and what we thought we recognized shifts and becomes something else. In a time when history unexpectedly resurfaces, cracks appear in our understanding of the present. What lies beneath the surface? What is it that we see – and what is it that we don’t see?
Here We Are Now continues the exploration of the enigmatic and elusive through contemporary artists' perspectives on a world in constant flux, where the boundary between the real and the unreal is constantly shifting. Here, we encounter art that not only reflects the present, but also challenges our perception of it.
In the spring and summer of 2025, Here We Are Now will be showcased alongside Sven-Harrys Konstmuseum's major presentation of Dick Bengtsson, an artist whose work constantly navigated the ambiguous and multi-layered.
